Empowering the Parent Voice - A Collaborative Response to the Parent Survey
Follow Up Session
May 23, 2013 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the DDSB Education Center (Room 1011)
At Durham District School Board we are supportive of all families. We are inviting all parents who self identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender and have children in the Durham District School Board to join us for a follow up to our last evening of dialogue. LGBT parents of children in JK through Grade 12 welcome.
This year's Parent Reaching Out Grant is entitled: Empowering the Parent Voice - A Collaborative Response to the Parent Survey. Data from last year's Parent Survey indicated that social realities, in particular race, sexual orientation, and/or faith, may be barriers to parental engagement within the DDSB. This session will share and highlight data collected from DDSB parents. We will present next steps and ask for further parental input as we continue to develop a deeper understanding of some barriers experienced by the LGBTQ group and look at targeted ways of increasing desired parental involvement.
In February, Durham Region Transit advised Durham Student Transportation Services the bulk rate restricted student pass would be discontinued effective September 2013. Starting this fall, the discounted restricted student pass will no longer be available to the Durham District School Board for sale to students at secondary schools. In an effort to provide service for students who were possibly buying a bus pass, the Board approved transportation for secondary students living more than 4.0 km from the designated school on traditional black/yellow school bus vehicles. For September, Durham Transit will continue to operate school specials, and students may purchase an unrestricted student pass directly from Durham Region Transit.
|Congratulations to Pine Ridge Teacher Brenda Hopper for her award presented May 14th by the Council for Exceptional Children!|
A group of Pine Ridge Secondary School students is crafting a way to help people living in poverty.
Mrs. Hopper’s Life Skills class and Mrs. Anderson's Practical Learning Program class are in the midst of turning empty clean cans, otherwise destined for the recycling bin, into “Anything Cans,” to be used as containers to hold anything from pens to cotton balls. The cans are being sold, raising money for children living in poverty.
